THE ROTARY CLUB OF SIRSI
Club History
The Rotary Club of Sirsi is one of the pioneers in India of the rotary movement, devoted to the ideal of fellowship through service.
It was in August 1959 that twenty-four leading citizens of Sirsi met at Town Municipal Council Hall, Sirsi in a historic meeting called by Shri R. V. Balur, Then Secretary, TMC Sirsi which led to the formation of the Rotary Club of Sirsi. At the meeting Rtn. Damodar Vithob Chittal then District Governor Representative of RI Dist 317 spoke about the aims and objectives of the Rotary Movement. Rtn. Vali, President of Dandeli consented to sponsor a club in Sirsi. The First Meeting of the provisional Rotary Club of Sirsi was held at Sirsi Urban Bank in November 1959 where the constitution and bylaws of Rotary Club of Sirsi were adopted. Rtn. Ramachandra Pundalik Prabhu was the founder President, Rtn. G. S. Hegde Ajjibal was the founder Secretary and Rtn. Sadananda Nilekani was the Sargent at Arms. The Rotary Club of Sirsi received its Charter on 17th February 1960 from Rtn. Homi Sizwa, District Governor, RI Dist. 317. The Club had 24 Charter members.
The Rotary Club of Sirsi held its weekly meetings at the Sirsi Urban Bank Building for five years. Then from 1965 to 1970 at the First Floor of Pandit General Library Sirsi and from 1970 to 2008 at The Keshwain Hall of Sirsi Urban Bank for 38 years, later shifted its meeting venue to existing own building, the Rotary Centre Sirsi.
From a membership of 24 in 1960, the Rotary Club of Sirsi has come a long way with many accomplishments to its credit during the past 6 decades, growing to its current strength of 117 members, implementing numerous projects serving the community at large, and is well poised to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee in 2020.
Two distinguished members namely Rtn. Sadanand Nilekani and Rtn. Subbrarao Kasarkod of our Club have the honour of elected as District Governors.
Our Club had hosted two District Conferences. In December 1972 the conference of RI District 317 was successfully organised at Sirsi with a total registration of 1300 participants under the Governorship of Rtn. Sadanand Nilekani. In 1984 the conference of RI District 3170 was successfully organised at Magod, Sirsi with a total registration of 1200 participants under the Governorship of Rtn. Subbarao Kasarkod.
The classification concept of Rotary allows the Rotary Club of Sirsi a membership compromising a high-performance cross-section of Sirsi’s successful business and professional men and women, all accomplishers in their own field ranging from Doctors, Engineers, Architects, Chartered Accountants, Bankers, Entrepreneurs, Educationalists, Merchandisers, Communicators.
This Club has inspired the incorporation of 7 Interact clubs, with about 300 school children as members, and 1 Rotaract club with a membership of about 200 college students. There is also a very active Inner Wheel Club.
Rotary Club of Sirsi has privilege to have taken the lead for founding The Modern Education Society in 1962 for providing higher education to the students of the upper ghat talukas of the U.K. district. The MES has been presently running 16 institutions, including various branches of studies like Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Polytechnic, Job-Oriented courses, Diploma in Nursing, aided and unaided multi-disciplinary Pre-university courses etc.
The mile stone of services offered by the Rotary Club of Sirsi is evidenced by the following Service Projects.
- Signature Project Rotary Charitable Hospital was established in the year 1985 in Commemoration of Rotary Club of Sirsi Silver Jubilee Celebration. Today it has a well-planned 100+ beds offering multi-speciality treatment to the people of three revenue districts namely Uttar Kannada, Haveri and Shimoga. It has been holding Eye Camps in rural areas of above three revenue districts and providing free food, free accommodation and free surgical treatment to poor and neglected people. Around 3,000 more beneficiaries are being operated in the free eye camps every year. 60,000 free cataract operation have been done by the Hospital in the last 37 years under the program Diseases and Treatment of Eye Care Program of Rotary Charitable Hospital. Won Rotary International Presidential Citation two times.
- Pure Drinking Water Project under Global Grant No. 1639332 in the year 2015-16. Five pure drinking water kiosks installed worth Rs. 25.16 lakhs. Two kiosks are in the school campuses, one at Govt. College Campus and three at Community Centres. More than 10,000 beneficiaries including 5,000 students are getting pure drinking water daily.
- E-Learning project worth Rs. 60 lakhs (USD 93,750/-) under Global Grant No. 1751344 in the year 2016-17. Provided 66 E-Learning Projectors to 66 Schools of Sirsi Taluka. More than 3,000 students are learning through these E-Learning Projectors.
- Rotary IMA PG Hospital NICU Project implemented under Public Private Partnership in the year 2013-14. UNICEF contributed Rs. 40 lakhs and RC Sirsi contributed Rs. 6 lakhs. This project is recognized as Most Outstanding Project in the District 3170.
- Sirsi Rotary Rain Water Harvesting, Ground Water Recharge and Save Water Project under Global Grant No. GG1871223 worth Rs. 50.80 lakhs (USD 72,496/-) in the year 2017-18. 6.5 lakhs litres rain water is storing in 130 water tanks installed in MES Colleges Campus. About 600 lady students of four ladies’ hostels are reusing this stored rain water for cleaning, washing the clothes and domestic purpose throughout the dry season. And 40 lakh litres rain water is storing in three small ponds of MES Colleges Campus for ground water recharge. This is helpful in increasing the ground water table levels of Wells and Bore Wells of MES campus as well as community surrounding MES Campus.
- Upgradation of Rotary IMA PG Hospitals’ NICU Project under Global Grant No. GG 2095616 worth Rs. 33.17 lakhs (USD 46,071/-) for the supply and installation of latest Medical Machineries and Medical Equipments at Rotary IMA PG Hospitals’ NICU in the year 2019-20. More than 1,500 new born babies who were suffered from severe illness got treated in the NICU free of charge.
- Rotary Club of Sirsi Covid 19 Grant Project for strengthening ICU infrastructure for Covid Care Hospital under Global Grant No. GG2012983 worth Rs. 31 lakhs (USD 39,100/-) in the year 2019-20. Rotary Club of Sirsi partnered with Rotary Belgaum E-Club implemented this Humanitarian Project. More than 1,000 covid patients were treated during the pandemic Covid Ist, 2nd and 3rd wave period.
- Rotary Club of Sirsi Educare Project under Global Grant No. GG2095615 worth Rs. 84 lakhs (USD 1,13,350/-) in the year 2019-20. Under this project Five Government Higher Primary Schools of Sirsi Taluka have been provided Computers, Printers, E-Learning Projectors, Sound Systems, Water Filters, Desks-Benches, Tables & Chairs, Steel Almirahs, Sports items, Lab Equipment, Library Books, Solar Systems, Lights & Fans, Wash basins, Toilet block, Open well, compound wall, school building and classrooms painting worth Rs 84 lakhs.
- Dr. V.S.Sode, Rotary Sirsi Open Air GYM for Senior Citizens Project. Open air GYM in the name of Dr. V.S.Sonde, Charter Member of Rotary Club of Sirsi at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs installed at Swimming Pool Complex of Marikamba Stadium Sirsi. Three Senior Citizen Gyms installed at Shankar Teerth, APMC ward and Rayanakere, Banavasi Road, Sirsi at a cost of Rs. 22 lakhs. Thousands of Senior Citizens are benefitting from these GYMs.
- Breast Feeding Kiosks Project under District Grant worth Rs. 1.42 lakhs in the year 2019-20. Three Breast Feeding Kiosks installed at Shree Marikamba Temple, Pandit General Govt. Hospital and KSRTC New Bus stand. This project is recognized as the Most Innovative Project in the District 3170.
The Rotary Club of Sirsi has diversified its activities through its sustained work towards community development and has been able to attempt a number of service programmes such as Blood Donation Camps, Health Check-up Camps, Diabetics and Hypertension screening camps, Javelin Diabetic Camps, Eye Camps, Camps under Menstrual Hygiene Management Project, Pulse Polio programs every year, Sapling Plantation, Rain Water Harvesting, Creation of Happy schools, Educational assistance for the needy students and endless other projects only because of generous donations of time and money by the club members.
Rotary Club of Sirsi is known in the community for Excellence in Service to Humanity and for Exemplary Accomplishments of Rotarians.
